Princeton Practices and Meets the Media on First Day in Madison
March 28, 2008 | Men's Ice Hockey
MADISON, Wis. -- The Princeton men's hockey team spent its first morning in Madison, Wis., for the NCAA Regionals at the Kohl Center. The team had its morning practice and several members of the team met the media.
Head Coach Guy Gadowsky, junior Lee Jubinville and senior Mike Moore did interviews with ESPN for Saturday's broadcast, plus Moore and Gadowsky were involved in the press conference. Below are quotes from that press conference.
Head Coach Guy Gadowsky
Opening comments: “This is just a great opportunity for the program. We're absolutely thrilled to get to come here and be able to compete against the teams we are. For me personally, it's another week I get to hang out with tremendous, quality student-athletes and great people. We're very excited.”
On the size of the rink: “I think the less you think about it, the less it makes a difference. We do have some speed, and we're hoping to take advantage of that. I am not one of [the coaches] who is going to make too big a deal of it. In college hockey, I think it's interesting that we play on different sheets.”
On having a WCHA background and three teams being from the WCHA: “I'm a Princeton guy now, so I wouldn't say my roots are that deep. I'm just happy to be here ? we'd play anybody at the NCAAs. It's interesting that there will be three WCHA teams there, but I'm thinking all about Princeton.”
On the team's leadership: “The leadership and quality of individuals in this program is phenomenal. It started long before this year. There are a lot of guys who are incredibly impressive individuals, very high-quality people, great student-athletes, who were setting standards four years. We have a group of guys who follow [that standard] pretty well.
Mike Moore on being newcomers to the tournament: “It's a phenomenal facility. That's the first thing you notice. It's a great quality ice sheet, [which] we [saw] out there for practice just now. We're really excited to be here. It's a tremendous experience so far for us. Just getting here was phenomenal. It was a hard-fought battle getting here and we're going to enjoy every moment of it.”
Mike Moore on what style of play the team plays: “We like to think of ourselves as a fast team. We come in hard and explode from the ?D-zone' and get to the net. That's something we take pride in. If you watched practice just now, you'll notice we don't just turn it on for games. We have a mentality and we try to do it consistently. [We] do all the little things like that, [like] blocking shots and taking hits to make plays, [and] throwing hits and initiating, and not retaliating. That is sort of a mentality we try to follow and just stick with it,”
Mike Moore on matching up with North Dakota's physical style of play: “I think we match up with anybody in the country with our speed. We feel like we can compete with the best teams in the nation and here we get that opportunity.”
Kyle Hagel on facing North Dakota: “All we can do is play our game. We're not going to change our game because we're not playing ECAC teams anymore. We know that North Dakota is supposed to be a very good defensive team as they have the lowest GAA in the nation. We can only do what we can do and hopefully we'll be able to score some goals.”
Kyle Hagel on playing in the Kohl Center: “I think the Kohl Center is fantastic. This is the nicest building that I've ever played in and the dressing rooms and the wide ice are just fantastic. The ice is also hard, compared to Albany last weekend which was really soft.”
Landis Stankievech on facing teams from the WCHA: “It's always exciting because we don't usually see buildings this big in the ECAC and when we get to play in [them], it's pretty fun because they're usually packed. The WCHA teams are good and it's a really good league and they are just fun to play against.”
Landis Stankievech on matching up with North Dakota: “I have no idea. I know they are good team and that they are good defensively and they also have some offensive firepower. I know we have a good team too, though, and we are just going to play our best.”
