Navy Claims Murtaugh Cup Thriller Over Men's Lightweights
March 29, 2008 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
Princeton and Navy were two of the best teams during fall racing, and they were also evenly-matched. If Saturday's season-opening regatta on the Severn River in Annapolis is any indication, not much has changed. Navy claimed the Joe Murtaugh Cup by .3 of a second over Princeton in men's lightweight crew.
Navy would sweep the regatta, although three races would be decided by approximately two seconds or less. Navy won the first varsity race in 5:52.0, while the Tigers finished just behind in 5:52.3. The second varsity was almost as close, as the Midshipmen's winning time of 6:03.1 topped Princeton by 1.8 seconds. The Princeton first novice made its debut in 6:15.3, falling to Navy by 2.2 seconds. Today's race conditions included a strong tailwind and rough water, according to row2k.com.
Princeton will return home to Lake Carnegie for three straight competitions in April, beginning next weekend as Princeton and Georgetown compete for the Fosburgh Cup, which Princeton won by 1.4 seconds last year.
