Tigers Drop 5-2 Decision To Penn In Women's Tennis Ivy Opener
March 29, 2008 | Women's Tennis
Princeton won the doubles point in dramatic fashion but was the victim of a trio of three-set defeats in singles as Penn defeated the Tigers, 5-2, in the Ivy League women's tennis opener for both teams at Jadwin Gym Saturday afternoon.
In a match that could have gone either way, the No. 64 Tigers had the early momentum after Sarah Huah and Ivana King won a thrilling 9-8 proset over Penn's Michelle Mitchell and Yulia Rivelis at No. 2 doubles to give Princeton the doubles point. But the No. 72 Quakers won each of four tightly-contested singles matches, including two three-setters in which Princeton had won the first set.
The Tigers had a straight-set singles win at No. 3, where freshman Taylor Marable had a 6-3, 6-4* win over Penn's Julia Koulbitskaya. Both Rebecca Parks, at No. 4, and Huah, at No. 6, won the first set in their singles matches, but Penn came back in each of those matches to win the final two sets.
In a big-time matchup between ranked players at No. 1 singles, Princeton's Melissa Saiontz and Penn's Kate Kosminskaya played an even match that ended up in a 7-6, 6-4 victory for the Quakers.
At No. 2 singles, Princeton's Ivana King came back to send her match with Yulia Rivelis to a third set before Rivelis won the deciding set 6-2.
Sarah Hoffman and Saiontz helped the Tigers clinch the doubles point earlier in the match, defeating Penn's Maria Anisimova and Charlotte Tansill.
The Tigers (7-7) will play at Brown and Yale next weekend.
