No. 2 Tigers, No. 6 Quakers Set To Tangle Wednesday Night
April 15, 2008 | Women's Lacrosse
The women's lacrosse teams from Princeton and Penn, on a collision course all season, bring their combined record of 20-1 (9-0 Ivy League) to the Class of 1952 Stadium Wednesday night (7 p.m.) in a game filled with Ivy League title implications.
The game will televised on a tape-delayed basis (Thurs. at 9 p.m.) by Comcast Sports (formerly Patriot 8). Live video through the TigerZone and free live audio will be available at GoPrincetonTigers.com.
With a win Wednesday, the sixth-ranked Quakers (10-1, 5-0) would clinch at least a share of the league title and an automatic NCAA tournament bid for the second straight season. With two Ivy games left after Wednesday, the second-ranked Tigers (10-0, 4-0) can't clinch anything yet with a win, but they would get a third victory this season over a Top 10 opponent.
Princeton is one of just two remaining unbeaten teams in Division I; top-ranked Northwestern (13-0) is the other. Penn's lone blemish came in a 10-8 loss at Stanford March 9; the Quakers have won eight straight since.
Both teams went to New England last weekend and earned victories. Princeton blew out Harvard in the second half, winning 18-9 for its 16th straight victory against the Crimson, while Penn won at Dartmouth 8-5 for its first victory in Hanover since 1988.
Junior Holly McGarvie earned Ivy League Honor Roll accolades for Princeton on Monday, scoring a career-best eight points (four goals, four assists) in the win over Harvard. McGarvie not only ranks second on the team in goals (19) but also leads the Tigers in ground balls (26) and draw controls (22).
Princeton continued its offensive efficiency Saturday, scoring on 18 of its 31 shots. The Tigers have scored a goal this season on 52% of their shot attempts (129 of 248); each of Princeton's top five scorers has scored a goal on at least 54% of her shots.
The Quakers have been stout defensively this season, allowing just more than six goals per game. Penn, led by a former Tiger assistant coach in Karin Brower, has also won four games by one-goal margins this year.
Penn's 14-10 win over Princeton at Franklin Field last year was its first over Princeton since 1993. The Tigers have won 18 of the last 20 games between the teams.
