Unsung Tigers Fall To Cornell, 4-3, In Men's Tennis Season Finale
April 20, 2008 | Men's Tennis
Back in the fall, the Princeton men's tennis team defeated UMBC, Yale and Brown to reach the finals of the ECAC team tournament. Amazingly, due to injury and illness, only one of the six singles players who led the Tigers to that title match played for Princeton in today's season finale against Cornell.
And still, Princeton came close to victory Sunday before falling 4-3 to the Big Red as a result of the final singles match of the day.
Even the one player that had been a singles starter during that fall run, Peter Capkovic, dealt with injuries for much of the year. Today, he dominated Kyle Doppelt 6-0 and 6-1 at No. 1 singles, finishing off a solid day in which he also joined with George Carpeni at No. 1 doubles for a win that helped the Tigers clinch the doubles point.
Carpeni, however, wouldn't be so lucky in singles player, suffering a shoulder injury that forced him to retire in the second set at No. 2. With standout freshman Ryan Kim out due to illness and two other singles stalwarts, Alex Krueger-Wyman and Charlie Brosens, unable to play for the last three weeks due to serious injuries, the Tigers still made it a match.
Princeton got a second singles win at No. 3 from freshman Alex Faust, who stepped up to defeat Jonathan Fife in a second-set tiebreak. At No. 6 singles, senior Mark Gober's match went to three sets, but Cornell's Rory Heggie ended up the winner to help clinch the match for the Big Red.
Earlier in the day, Gober and Faust clinched the doubles point for Princeton, winning by a 9-7 score at No. 2 over Mirza Kliz and Marc Asch.
The Tigers finished the spring season 9-11 and 1-6 in Ivy League play.
