Hoyas Outlast Tigers, 9-8, In Regular-Season Women's Lacrosse Finale
May 03, 2008 | Women's Lacrosse
Princeton and Georgetown played another one-goal thriller Saturday afternoon in Washington but, unlike last year, the ending wasn't what the Tigers had in mind.
The No. 7 Hoyas got the game winner from Patty Piotrowicz with seven minutes left and then stalled away much of the last four minutes in the Princeton end on the way to a 9-8 victory over the No. 6 Tigers in regular-season finale for both teams at the Multi-Sport Field.
With the game tied at 8, Piotrowicz drove one-on-one down the left wing with 7:11 left and scored on a hard shot past Tiger goalie Erin Tochihara, who was outstanding in her first career start with eight saves, including seven in the second half when the Hoyas (12-6) outshot Princeton 14-7. Tochihara would then keep Princeton (12-4) within one goal moments later, stopping two point-blank shots by Ashby Kaestner with six minutes left to keep the score at 9-8.
After Princeton cleared, however, Lizzy Drumm's tying opportunity for Princeton was wide, and Georgetown gained possession and cleared with four minutes left. The Tigers forced a pair of loose ball situations in the final four minutes but could not gain possession, and the Hoyas ran out the final 20 seconds by sending the ball back into their own end in the hands of goalie Caitlin Formby.
Each of the last six regular-season games between Princeton and Georgetown has now been decided by two goals or fewer.
The Tigers looked to take control of the game late in the first half, scoring four straight goals in the last 10:56 to take a 6-4 halftime lead. Drumm scored an unassisted goal to pull her team within 4-3 with 10:56 left, and Holly McGarvie then went on her own down the left wing to tie the game at 4-4 four minutes later.
Immediately after McGarvie's goal, Jenna Washabaugh won the draw control, saw no defender in front of her and scored to put Princeton ahead 5-4, a mere 21 seconds after McGarvie's goal. McGarvie would score again on a one-on-one drive with 2:58 left in the half to end the run at give the Tigers their two-goal halftime lead.
Georgetown quickly changed the momentum as the second half began, however, with Kaestner winning the draw control and finding Jordy Kirr nine seconds into the half to end Princeton's run. When Kaestner scored herself two minutes later, the game was tied for the fourth time, this time at 6-6.
Kaestner's goal with 13 minutes left put Georgetown ahead for the first time since midway through the first half, but Princeton junior Sarah Steele came off the bench to score a huge goal to tie the game two minutes later, rolling the left side of the crease and firing a shot past Formby.
McGarvie had two goals and an assist to lead the Tigers but was forced to the bench after suffering an injury midway through the second half. Seven players scored Princeton's eight goals.
Princeton won seven of the 11 draw controls in the first half, but the Hoyas won six of the eight draws in the second half on the way to erasing their two-goal halftime deficit.
Kirr, Kaestner and Molly Ford each scored twice for Georgetown, which outshot Princeton 25-17 for the game. Kirr added three assists for the Hoyas, who were playing their seventh game this season against a team ranked sixth or higher at the time of the game.
Princeton looks for its 11th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance when those bids are announced on Mon., May 5. The selections will be announced live on CBS College Sports (formerly CSTV) at 7 p.m. ET.
