Holly McGarvie, who leads Princeton and ranks among the Ivy leaders in ground balls, draw controls and caused turnovers, and Marie McKenna, part of a Princeton defense that ranks in the top 10 nationally in goals allowed per game, were each named first-team All-Ivy League selections in women's lacrosse in a vote of the league's eight head coaches announced Thursday.
McGarvie, one of 18 nominees for the Tewaaraton Trophy honoring the national player of the year, was one of five unanimous first-team selections. The junior midfielder leads the Tigers with 39 ground balls, 38 draw controls and 24 caused turnovers. On the offensive end of the field, McGarvie is second on the Tigers with 31 goals and third with 41 points while starting all 16 games.
The Medford, N.J., native was an honorable mention All-Ivy pick as a sophomore and the Ivy League Rookie of the Year and a second-team all-league pick in 2006 as a freshman. She also earned Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week honors this past week.
McKenna, who has started all 16 games for Princeton on defense, has helped the Tigers rank No. 8 nationally in scoring defense, allowing just more than eight goals per game. The junior from Glenside, Pa., ranks third on the team with 25 ground balls and second on the team behind McGarvie with 22 caused turnovers. She also has 11 draw controls and just seven turnovers this season.
Another member of Princeton's defensive unit, senior captain Norris Novak, was one of three Tigers to earn second-team All-Ivy honors. Novak, a four-year starter for Princeton, has started all 16 games this season and is second on the team with 28 ground balls. The Baltimore native earns All-Ivy honors for the second time in her career after making the first team a year ago.
Princeton's leading scorer, junior Christine Casaceli, also earns second-team honors after a breakout offensive season for the Tigers. The junior attacker from Longmeadow, Mass., has team highs of 34 goals and 45 points this season. She entered 2008 with 22 goals and 34 points in her first two seasons in a Tiger uniform.
Junior captain Katie Cox, who has played both defense and midfield in 2008, also earns second-team all-league honors for the Tigers. In addition to ranking among the Princeton leaders with 22 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers, Cox has 13 goals and 10 assists while starting all 16 games. Both Casaceli and Cox earn All-Ivy honors for the first time.
Another junior, Kristin Schwab, earns honorable mention All-Ivy honors for Princeton. Schwab, who missed several games late in the season due to injury, has 14 goals and nine assists this season while also ranking among the team leaders with 22 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers.
Penn senior goalie Sarah Waxman was named the Ivy League Player of the Year, while Harvard freshman midfielder Jess Halpern earned Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors.
