September 13, 2008 | Men's Water Polo
PRINCETON -- Liam Farrell scored with 19 seconds remaining to lift 15th-ranked Santa Clara to a 10-9 win over the 20th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team on Saturday afternoon at the Princeton Invitational at DeNunzio Pool. Junior mark Zalewski scored five goals in the loss for the Tigers.
Princeton never led in the game, but the game was tight throughout and was tied on eight different occasions. The largest lead of the game came in the second quarter when Santa Clara led 5-3, but in the second half, the game was tied at five, six, seven, eight and nine before the late game winner.
The Broncos raced to an early 2-0 lead on goals from Farrell and Nicholas Poggetti but the first quarter ended tied at 2-2 as Zalewski scored two goals to even the score. In the second quarter, the teams traded goals before Santa Clara went ahead 5-3, but sophomore Matt Hale scored one of his three goals in the game with 23 seconds left in the half to cut the margin to 5-4 at the break.
Zalewski brought Princeton even at 5-5 three minutes into the third quarter, but the Tigers were never able to gain a lead. Santa Clara scored and Princeton was able to answer all through the third and fourth quarters until the decisive goal was scored.
In addition to Zalewski and Hale, juniors Eric Vreeland and Douglas Wigley added goals for Princeton. Junior goalie Scott Hvidt made nine saves in the game.
