Stanford Shuts Down Princeton 12-2 in Men's Water Polo

PRINCETON -- Third-ranked Stanford proved too strong for the 20th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team on Saturday night in a 12-2 win at DeNunzio Pool during the Princeton Invitational. Senior Brendan Colgan and junior Douglas Wigley scored for the Tigers.
The game was tight through the first quarter as Stanford managed just a single goal from Andrew Drake in the opening period. Princeton had a chance to tie the game at 1-1 later in the period when junior Eric Vreeland had a five-meter shot blocked.
The Cardinal opened the game up in the second quarter with four goals and added five more in the third quarter to lead 10-0. Stanford moved the lead to 11-0 on a Jacob Smith goal before the Tigers got on the board with Colgan's goal at 3:48 of the final period. Wigley scored the second Princeton goal two minutes later.
Sophomore Mike Merlone made seven saves in three quarters in goal, including three in opening period. Junior Henry Fyfe made two saves in the final quarter.
Princeton falls to 0-3 with the loss and will look to bounce back on Sunday afternoon when it hosts Ivy-rival Brown 12:40 p.m. Click here for complete results from all of Friday and Saturday's game of the Princeton Invitational.
