Men's Water Polo Downs Iona 8-5 in ECAC Fifth-Place Game

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The 18th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team defeated Iona 8-5 on Sunday morning in the fifth-place game at the ECAC Championships. Junior Douglas Wigley had three goals and sophomore Mike Merlone made 12 saves.
The game was tight throughout the first half and the teams went to halftime tied at 4-4. The Tigers though pulled ahead with two goals in the third quarter while shutting out Iona in the quarter to lead 6-4 and never look back. Princeton then pulled ahead in the final quarter for the 8-5 win.
Wigley led the offensive charge with three goals and had seven goals over the three tournament games then Tigers played. Junior Mark Zalewski added two goals in the win as Princeton improved to 3-4 overall this season and has now won two games in a row. The Tigers return to action next Saturday with a pair of league games at No. 20 Johns Hopkins and No. 13 Navy.
