Slow Start Dooms Volleyball At Cal-Baptist
January 28, 2009 | Men's Volleyball
A 7-0 run to open the match was a sign of things to come Tuesday night, as the NAIA No. 2-ranked Cal-Baptist Lancers swept Princeton in the Tigers' second match of the season. Princeton got seven kills and four blocks from Mike Vincent, who hit .308 for the match.
Cal-Baptist improved to 4-3 with the 30-16, 30-23, 30-21 victory. Princeton, which takes on California-San Diego Wednesday night, fell to 0-2.
The Lancers rolled off the first seven points of the match, including four on aces by Blair Penner. That set was never in doubt, but Princeton was able to stay tight early in the second set. At 11-11, Cal-Baptist won five of the next six points and never led its lead drop below three points from that point. The Tigers held an early lead in the third set, but the Lancers were far too strong and ran away with the nine-point win to close the match.
Sophomore Vincent Tuminelli led Princeton in kills (nine) for the second straight night, while fellow outside Phil Rosenberg added five kills. Senior setter Brandon Denham had 22 assists and four digs.
Head coach Glenn Nelson was able to use his full roster, including two freshmen who made their collegiate debuts. Greg Wilson has a kill, the team's lone ace and two blocks, while Scott Liljestrom saw action in one game.
