Men's Squash Stays Unbeaten With Sweep Of Penn
January 28, 2009 | Men's Squash
The No. 2 Princeton men's squash team was without three of its regular starters, but quality depth kept the Tigers perfect. Princeton swept all nine matches against Penn in its first match of 2009; it now heads into a challenging weekend, including a road match at No. 3 Yale.
Without Mauricio Sanchez, Kelly Shannon and Santiago Imberton available, Princeton got quality efforts from some lesser-known players to keep its perfect Ivy League season intact. Jesus Pena, Clay Blackiston and Philip Sopher handled the final three spots in the lineup and all contributed 3-0 victories. Blackiston had to work the hardest, including a 9-8 victory in the middle game, but he made it through unscathed.
Senior Kimlee Wong handled the No. 1 position and swept James Clark 2, 3, 2; freshman Chris Callis moved all the way up to the No. 2 position and had little trouble in a 0, 3, 2 victory.
Head coach Bob Callahan is hoping he has a full roster for the weekend, which begins Saturday at No. 3 Yale. The Bulldogs, the last Ivy League team to beat Princeton (2006) are always a difficult team to beat in New Haven, and they have posted some impressive results this season. On Sunday, Princeton will host Rochester, one of the true rising powers on the collegiate scene.
