Volleyball Gets First Victory With Sweep At Hope International
January 30, 2009 | Men's Volleyball
A major effort from senior outside Phillip Rosenberg helped the Princeton men's volleyball team pick up its first win in 2009 with a 3-0 victory at Hope International. Rosenberg recorded 15 kills and five digs and hit .684 for the Tigers, who open league play next weekend.
After dropping its first three matches during its season-opening California trip, Princeton bounced back with a 30-26, 30-18, 30-20 win to move to 1-3 overall. Rosenberg had his best match of the young season, and his 15 kills was the most for any Tiger player over the first four games. He was one of the Princeton players with double-digit kills; rightside starter Carl Hamming had 13 kills and hit .579, while sophomore outside Vincent Tuminelli had 10 kills and a team-high nine digs.
Princeton also got solid play from its middles. The duo of Mike Vincent and Jeff McCown combined for 13 kills, eight blocks and only four errors, and both hit better than .300 for the match. Senior setter Brandon Denham recorded a match-best 46 assists.
Despite holding a big early lead in the first set, Princeton had to dig down late to get its first set of the year. A lead that had been as great as eight points slimmed to one at 24-23, but a kill by Hamming and a block by Denham and Vincent opened up some breathing room. Tuminelli added two kills in the game and Princeton held off the charge for a 30-26 win. Princeton used a late 10-3 run to sprint away with the second set and took control midway through the third to clinch the match.
Princeton will make its 2009 EIVA debut next weekend when it heads to Juniata Friday at 7 p.m.
