Men's Water Polo Drops UCI Invitational Opener to Stanford

IRVINE, Calif. (10/10/09) -- The 14th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team fell to top-ranked Stanford 14-6 on Saturday morning in the opening game of the UCI Invitational. Princeton will face the Pepperdine/UC Irvine loser on Saturday afternoon.
Princeton fell behind in the opening half of Stanford scored three first quarter goals, while holding Princeton off the scoreboard. Stanford added three more goals in the second quarter to Princeton's one and the Cardinal led 6-1 at the half.
Senior Douglas Wigley led the Tigers with two goals, while four other added single goals, including season Mark Zalewski, the team's leading scorer. Wigley, Zalewski and freshmen Billy Tifft and Jack Ruth scored on man advantages and classmate Tim Wenzlau scored on a 5-meter shot.
Senior goalkeeper Scottie Hvidt made 16 saves in the cage. The loss drops the Tigers to 7-7 this season. Princeton will play again on Saturday at 1:20 p.m. PT
