October 24, 2009 | Men's Soccer
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (10/24/09) - Sophomore Antoine Hoppenot scored his second goal of the afternoon in the 102nd minute to give Princeton a 2-1 win over No. 11-ranked Harvard in men's soccer on Saturday, Oct. 24 at Osiri Field.
The win was Princeton's first over a ranked team this season, as the Tigers push their unbeaten streak to four games, going 3-0-1 since Oct. 14.
Though the first half was scoreless, Princeton dominated offensively with 11 shots to Harvard's five. In the first six minutes alone, Princeton took six shots and did not allow the Crimson to get into its attacking third.
The second half was more balanced with each team taking seven shots, but it was the Crimson that struck first. In the 66th minute Andre Akpan was pulled down inside the box and scored on the ensuing penalty kick.
The one-goal lead wouldn't last long. Princeton scored exactly 20 seconds later. Hoppenot slid the ball past Crimson goalkeeper Austin Harms and into the right corner after picking up a through ball from junior Josh Walburn.
In the first overtime, Princeton had the only shot on goal while Harvard had two chances go high.
Just 1:14 into the second overtime, Hoppenot delivered the winning goal, when he headed in a cross from junior Tim Sedwitz.
Junior goalkeeper Sean Lynch made three saves for the Princeton, earning his seventh win of the season. Harvard's Harms stopped seven shots. The Tigers finished the game with a 20-14 advantage in shots and led in corner kicks, 3-2.
With the win Princeton improves to 7-5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Ivy League. Harvard is now 10-3-1 and 2-1-1 in the league.
Hoping to keep the streak alive, Princeton will host Cornell on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m., at Roberts Stadium.
