PRINCETON, N.J. – In a dogfight capped by two second-half goals from Bardia Hormozi, the #23 Princeton men's soccer team downed JMU, 2-0, on Friday night in Roberts Stadium.
Connecting with Tyler Vilet and Roka Tsunehara, Hormozi scored the breakthrough goal in the 51st minute before doubling it in the 90th.
Andrew Samuels was in goal for his second-consecutive shutout, making six saves in the contest.
"JMU threw a lot of different challenges at us, and we found a way to respond with some grit in the second half and come away with a result against a very strong team," said Head Coach Jim Barlow. "We had to defend a lot of restarts and a lot of long balls, and the guys in the back were really tough. Getting a shutout against this group was a good accomplishment."
How It Happened
The Tigers were defending early, with JMU forcing a save by Samuels in the second minute with a low center shot on target. The offensive pressure from the Dukes continued, forcing the Tigers to continue to defend as the game increased in physicality.
As the Tigers settled into the game, they started generating chances, as commotion in the box led to a blocked shot and a rebound sent wide by Hormozi in the 17th minute. Princeton's first shot on target came from Kevin Kelley, who forced a save by the Duke keeper Erik Jaspers in the 21st minute.
With a handful of Tiger subs coming on late in the half, Princeton gained fresh momentum with Hormozi, Kristian Kelley and Benjamin Manfroy all making attempts to score, but none made it into the net. After a chippy first half, the game went into the break scoreless.
Coming out of halftime, Princeton looked sharper, immediately going on the attack and earning a corner just minutes in.
In the 51st minute, the Tigers found the go-ahead goal as Tsunehara served the ball in front of the goal line, where Vilet headed it down and teed it up perfectly for Hormozi to flick into the net.
Fresh into the 1-0 lead, Princeton was on the defense again as JMU sent the momentum the other way. As the Dukes pressed, chaos in the box led to a shot going just inches wide before Samuels made another save.
Another good chance came for JMU with Christopher Salvesen on a breakaway run, but sophomore centerback Frederik Sadjak made a precise slide tackle to deflect his shot clear of the net.
The Tigers continued to work for the win, with Sadjak making another key tackle in the box. Around the 80-minute mark, the Dukes' Ikenna Nnawuchi earned a second yellow, causing him to be ejected from the game and for JMU to play the final 10 down a man.
Still, JMU found its best chance of the game in the 87th minute as Carlos Tur sent a looping ball just under the crossbar, but Samuels jumped to make the punching save to keep it 1-0.
Going right back the other way, Garry Zhang sent the ball up front for Hormozi, who picked it up on the run and jabbed it past Jaspers and the Duke defender to make it 2-0 Tigers with just seconds to go.
