Squash Teams Open Home Season Saturday Against Brown, Bates
December 04, 2009 | Men's Squash, Women's Squash
The reigning Ivy League champion Princeton men's and women's squash teams will open their 2009-10 home schedules Saturday against Brown and Bates. The competition begins against Ivy rival Brown Saturday at 11.
The women's team was without three top seniors last weekend in Amanda Siebert, Emery Maine or Neha Kumar, but the Tigers were able to get off to a winning Ivy start thanks in part to a pair of freshmen. No. 1 player Julie Cerullo earned a 3-0 win, while classmate Casey Cortes fought through four tough games to earn a 3-1 at the No. 7 spot. Senior Vanessa Yu won the biggest match of her career with a 3-1 win at the No. 6 position.
Brown is 0-1 after a 9-0 loss to Harvard in its season opener. Seniors Laura Pyne, Kali Schellenberg and Sarah Roberts are the captains for Brown, which won the Kurtz Cup during the Howe Cup weekend last year.
Bates is off to a strong start this season, winning all four matches by a combined score of 35-1. Cheri-Ann Parris, a freshman from Barbados, took over the No. 1 position and has helped the Bobcats to an undefeated start.
The Princeton men's team, also dealing with injuries, fought through a tough 6-3 victory at Cornell last weekend. Highly touted freshman Todd Harrity had a successful debut, winning a pair of matches at the No. 1 position. Junior Dave Letourneau is building on a strong summer and also swept two matches at the No. 2 position.
The Brown men are 0-1 after a 9-0 loss to Harvard, while Bates is 3-1. The Bobcats' only loss came to national champion Trinity, although Bates did earn a win at the No. 1 position.
College squash matches are being scored differently this season. Instead of games going to nine and points being scored only on your serve, games will now go to 11, and every rally will be scored. Games must be won by two points.
