Women's Squash Sweeps Home Tri-Meet, Moves To 2-0 In Ivy Play
December 06, 2009 | Women's Squash
Freshman Julie Cerullo won two more matches at the No. 1 position to lead the three-time defending Howe Cup national champion Princeton to a home sweep of Brown and Bates Saturday at the Jadwin Squash Courts.
Playing with senior tri-captain Emery Maine for the first time this season, the Princeton women moved to 3-1 overall, 2-0 in the Ivy League with a 9-0 win over Bates and an 8-1 win over Brown. Cerullo won both of her matches by 3-0 scores, as did seven other Tigers, including junior Jackie Moss at the No. 2 position and Maine at the No. 3 spot. Princeton was still without All-America standouts Amanda Siebert and Neha Kumar, but head coach Gail Ramsay is hopeful both will be ready when the season resumes in 2010.
"We are still struggling with injuries," Ramsay said. "In spite of that we had some strong performances against Brown. Daphne Rein-Weston filled the number 8 spot nicely and won in three decisive games. Overall I am happy to see the success of our team depth so far this season. All the players from 1-14 deserve to get some playing time and they are really stepping up and showing us how capable they are."
After the 8-1 win over Brown, Princeton came right back with a 9-0 win over Bates College. The Tigers' only loss in the morning came at the No. 9 spot from Eliza Kontulis, but the Tiger sophomore bounced back in a big way against Bates.
"I was especially happy to see Eliza Kontulis playing well," Ramsay said. "She struggled against Brown but really figured some things against her Bates opponent. After dropping the first game she made the needed adjustments to put together one of her best matches so far."
