Penn Ends Tiger Women's Squash Ivy Streak With 6-3 Win
January 28, 2010 | Women's Squash
The Princeton women's squash team, ranked seventh in the nation, fell to the third-ranked Penn Quakers 6-3 Wednesday night at the Ringe Squash Courts in Philadelphia. This is Princeton's first Ivy League loss since its last trip to Penn two seasons ago.
Princeton, coming off a seven-week layoff, was able to get three wins near the top of its lineup, but Penn's overall depth was too much for the three-time defending Ivy League champion. Princeton's depth was compromised by the loss of injured senior tri-captain Emery Maine; fellow seniors Amanda Siebert and Neha Kumar returned to play their first matches after injuries, but neither managed a victory.
Princeton received wins from No. 2 Julie Cerullo, No. 3 Jackie Moss and No. 5 Kaitlin Sennatt. Cerullo remained undefeated in her collegiate career with a 3-0 win over Nabilla Ariffin, while Moss fought off a match ball in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Sydney Scott. Sennatt won a battle of Ivy League veterans with a 3-1 win over Britt Hebden.
“Jackie had a great win over Sidney,” Sennatt said. “It was a close match at the end, and Jackie fought off a match ball against her. Julie Cerullo played awesome. Our plan is to get better from this and improve enough that if see them at Howe Cup, we can have a better match.”
Siebert fell 3-0 at the top spot to reigning Ivy League Player of the Year Kristen Lange, while Kumar fell 3-0 to strong Quaker freshman Rachael Goh. Junior Nikki Sequeira, also returning from injury, fell 3-0 at No. 6, while Katie Giovinazzo, Casey Cortes and Vanessa Yu also fell in the bottom three spots.
Princeton won't have to wait long to try to get back into the Ivy League race; the Tigers will host the fourth-ranked Yale Bulldogs at noon Saturday at the Jadwin Squash Courts.
