Princeton leads the all-time series with Johns Hopkins, 3-1. The two teams only began playing each other in 2005 and since that time Princeton has opened each season with the Blue Jays. The Tigers posted a 9-6 win on March 5, 2005 in the first game of the series. Johns Hopkins earned a narrow 8-7 win in 2006 and Princeton did the same in 2007, taking an 11-10 double overtime game. Last season in Baltimore, the Tigers captured a 7-5 victory.
Princeton, ranked No. 8, returns 24 letterwinners and nine starters from its 2008 squad that finished the season with a 13-5 overall record and a 5-2 mark in the Ivy League. The Tigers also bring in eight freshmen that ranked as one of the best rookie classes in the country by Inside Lacrosse. Leading the Tigers on attack will be senior All-America Christine Casaceli, who finished last season with a team-high 38 goals and 13 assists for 51 points. Senior All-America Holly McGarvie will anchor the midfield as one of three team captains. She led the team in three major statistical categories last year: ground balls (47), caused turnovers (26) and draw controls (47). McGarvie contributed 35 goals, nine of which were free-position goals, and 11 assists for 46 points. A member of the US World Cup Team, McGarvie was recently named to the Tewaarton Watch List last week, along with defender Marie McKenna. McKenna, a tri-captain, was named an All-America last season after causing 23 turnovers and picking up 29 ground balls.
No. 13 Johns Hopkins opened its season on Feb. 21 with a 15-10 win over George Mason before an 11-6 loss to Georgetown on Feb. 25. Its game with Princeton will be its first game on the road this season. The squad returns 21 of 26 letterwinners and seven starters from 2008 when they team finished 8-9 overall and third in the ALC with a 2-2 mark. Junior Paige Ibello is at the top of the scoring column with five points, while sophomore Brooke Foussadier and freshman Colleen McCaffrey each have four points. McCaffrey leads the team in ground balls with seven and in draw controls with five. Junior Lizzie O'Ferrall has been the only goalie that Hopkins has used this season. She has made 13 saves and allowed 21 goals for a 10.50 goals against average and a .382 save percentage.
