Women's Lacrosse Earns 13-11 Win Over No. 16 JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. (3/18/09) ? Senior Christine Casaceli matched her personal best with a five-point effort to lead the No. 9-ranked Princeton women's lacrosse team to a 13-11 win over No. 16 James Madison on Wednesday, March 18. The Tigers got goals from seven different players and the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week sophomore Erin Tochihara made 12 saves, including holding JMU to 0-for-3 shooting from the eight-meter arc.
Sophomore Lizzy Drumm had two goals and two assists, while senior Holly McGarvie had one of each. Junior Kristin Morrison and senior Kristin Schwab scored two goals apiece and senior Katie Cox collected two assists.
After Princeton's first shot by Drumm hit the pipe, the squad converted on its next four attempts, to take a 4-0 lead just over 10 minutes into the game. The Tigers got goals from Casaceli, Morrison, freshman Cassie Pyle and senior Sarah Steele.
JMU responded with a 3-0 run to cut its deficit back to one, 4-3 at 10:51. The teams traded goals three times for the remainder of the half before Casaceli scored off a pass from Drumm during the final seconds to give the Tigers an 8-6 advantage at the break.
Drumm added to Princeton's lead with a tally two minutes into the second session before the Dukes scored three unanswered goals to knot the game at 9-9 at 19:47.
Schwab put Princeton back ahead when she scored on a free-position shot at 18:16. Casaceli followed with her third goal of the game at 13:55 and set up Morrison just over a minute later to give the Tigers a 12-9 edge at 12:39.
Mary Kate Lomady and Jaime Dardine each tallied unassisted goals to bring the Dukes within one, 12-11, with 4:19 to play.
JMU had a chance to even it up a minute later when Princeton was called for a major foul, giving Lomady a free chance at the net. Tochihara came up big making one of her 12 saves on the attempt. With 46 seconds left Monica Zabel was dealt a yellow card leaving the Dukes with an even tougher time trying to find the equalizer.
With 12 seconds remaining, Casaceli notched her fourth goal of the game to give Princeton a 13-11 lead. Lomady won the ensuing draw control with 10 seconds left and Kim Griffin earned a free-position attempt after a foul with three ticks left on the clock. Tochihara swiped the ball, her third free-position save of the game, to give the Tigers the 13-11 victory.
Griffin led the Dukes with six points, scoring five goals and adding an assist. Dardine and Lomady each collected four points, while Zabel had two helpers. Alex Menghetti earned the start in net, making one save and allowing nine goals in 43:23. Morgan Kelly came in on relief for the final 16:37 and made one save and allowed four.
JMU had a 12-6 edge in ground balls, a 14-12 advantage in draw controls and had two more caused turnovers than the Tigers. Princeton cleared on 13 of its 14 attempts and went 2-for-2 off of free-position shots. JMU went 10-for-11 on clearing attempts and was 0-for-3 on free-position shots.
Princeton improves to 4-1 on the season, while JMU falls to 5-2.
The Tigers will face No. 5 Virginia on Saturday, March 21 at 1 p.m.
