Virginia Hosts Women's Lacrosse on Saturday

PRINCETON, N.J. (3/19/09) - The No. 9 ranked Princeton women's lacrosse team will face its fourth ranked opponent in as many games when it travels to No. 7 Virginia on Saturday, March 21 for a 1 p.m., contest.
The game will be shown on ACC Select for a charge of a one-time fee of $5.95. Live stats will be available free of charge with a link provided on the Princeton Athletics Web site.
The series between Princeton and Virginia, which began in 1989, is tied at 13 games apiece. The Tigers won the meeting last year, an 8-7 decision, although the Cavaliers have a 3-2 edge when looking at the last five meetings. Princeton has met Virginia in the NCAA Tournament more than any other team, a total of six times. Once again the series is tied in the post season with three wins each. Princeton and Virginia have met in the national championship three times, in 1993, 2003 and 2004.
Princeton heads into the weekend with a 4-1 record after topping JMU, 13-11 on Wednesday. The Tigers have played four nationally-ranked teams this season, losing just one to Duke, 13-12 on March 7. Princeton is currently ranked No. 9 in both national polls.
Seniors Christine Casaceli and Holly McGarvie are at the top of the scoring column with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Junior Kristin Morrison and sophomore Lizzy Drumm have 12 points apiece and senior Sarah Steele has 10. Morrison boasts a team-high 10 goals, while McGarvie is the team's assist leader with six helpers. McGarvie leads the team in ground balls with 16, draw controls with 18 and caused turnovers with 10. Classmate Marie McKenna also has 10 caused turnovers. Sophomore Erin Tochihara has a 4-1 record as the Tigers' starting goalie. She has a 9.11 goals against average and a .576 save percentage, making 53 stops on 92 shots. Junior Kaitlyn Perrelle has played in two games and has made six stops on 15 chances.
Virginia holds the No. 7 ranking in the national poll with a 6-2 overall record. The team is 4-1 when playing on its home turf this season, which includes a 10-9 overtime victory over William & Mary on Tuesday, March 17. Virginia was down 9-6 but scored three goals in the last eight minutes to tie the game and force overtime.
The team, which includes five members on the Tewaarton Trophy Watch List, started the season with four straight wins, including a 14-11 win over Syracuse, to move up to No. 2 in the poll. The team slipped five places in the poll after losses to Maryland, North Carolina an overtime win with Penn State.
Leading the Cavaliers offensively is senior Ashley McCulloch with 19 goals and 16 assists for 35 points. Senior Blair Weymouth is the team's top goal scorer with 24 tallies to go along with eight helpers for 32 points. Senior Jenny Hauser, junior Kaitin Duff, redshirt junior Whitaker Hagerman and freshman Josie Owen are also in double digits in scoring. Sophomore Liz Downs and Duff have the most ground balls on the team with 15 and 19 respectively. Junior Brittany Kalkstein has a team-best 32 draw controls while Duff leads Virginia in caused turnovers with 19. Redshirt sophomore Lauren Benner has started all eight games and has a 5-2 record. She has a 10.02 goals against average and a .435 save percentage, stopping 54 of 124 shots. Senior Sara Hairfield has played in over 72 minutes across seven games and has a 6.58 GAA and a .500 save percentage.
