Alicia Aemisegger Earns Another Top-10 Finish At NCAAs With Lifetime Best 500 Free
March 20, 2009 | Women's Swimming and Diving
Junior Alicia Aemisegger picked up her eighth All-America honor during Thursday's championship session of the 2009 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, which are being held at College Station, Texas. Aemisegger's time of 4:38.02 was actually the fifth-best time of the evening, but she was edged out of the championship finals by one place during the preliminary session.
Aemisegger swam the preliminary session in 4:40.01, which was the ninth-fastest time of the session. Only the eight fastest times compete for the NCAA championship, while spots nine through 16 race in the consolation final. Aemisegger lowered her time by nearly two full seconds and set a Princeton record with her time of 4:38.02 in the consolation final.
Aemisegger, the three-time Ivy League Championships Swimmer of the Meet, still has her two strongest events still to come this weekend. She will compete for the 400 IM title Friday; Aemisegger reached the 400 IM Olympic Trial final last summer and is a former silver medalist at NCAAs in this event. On Saturday, Aemisegger will swim the mile, where she has already qualified for the final swim with the sixth-best time heading into NCAAs.
Senior diver Katie Giarra barely missed reaching the consolation finals, but she put forth yet another strong performance during a brilliant senior season. She scored 270.20 in the preliminary rounds, which left her less than one point outside of the Top 16. Giarra was the 2007 and 2009 Ivy League Championships Diver of the Meet.
