Men's Hockey Solidifies NCAA Hopes With Consolation Game Tie
March 21, 2009 | Men's Ice Hockey
ALBANY, N.Y. -- It had been 81 games since the Princeton men's hockey team last skated to a tie, but on Saturday afternoon in the ECAC Hockey Consolation game, a tie was exactly what Princeton needed. The Tigers and St. Lawrence skated to a 2-2 tie, which was enough to put Princeton in line for an NCAA tournament at-large bid.
Princeton found itself on the NCAA tournament bubble last night when it fell to Cornell in the ECAC semifinals in double-overtime. As a result, Saturday's third-place game between Princeton and St. Lawrence became, in effect, an NCAA tournament play-in game. Both teams were likely in with wins, while Princeton was in with a tie. Of course this will not be final until the NCAA selection show tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN2.
Less than 16 hours after falling to Cornell, the Tigers were back on the ice and got off to a quick start against St. Lawrence as junior Dan Bartlett put Princeton ahead 1-0 with a goal 4:59 into the contest. Bartlett and sophomore Sam Sabky passed the puck back-and-forth through the neutral zone before Sabky fired a shot. The attempt was saved by St. Lawrence netminder Alex Petizian, but the rebound came to Bartlett who slid it by him for his 15th goal of the season. Junior Brad Schroeder was also credited with an assist on the goal.
St. Lawrence evened the score midway through the period on a Matt Generous goal and the first period ended with the teams tied at 1-1.
Princeton went ahead in the second period thanks to another goal from Bartlett, who netted his second goal of the game and seventh goal of the post season. It was his team-leading 16th of the season and marked the sixth straight game in which he has scored. This goal came 1:16 into the second period while the Tigers with a two-man advantage. Bartlett gained the puck near the face off dot and beat Petizian on the short side. Junior Mark Magnowski had a helper on the goal.
Princeton held the 2-1 edge into the third period, but saw St. Lawrence knot the score at 5:48 of the final stanza when Derek Keller's shot banked off the post and into the net. The Tigers rebounded from there and held St. Lawrence down over the final three-quarters of the final frame.
In overtime, neither team recorded a shot on goal as the game finished in a 2-2 deadlock. St. Lawrence won a shootout to claim third-place in the tournament but the game is considered a tie in the NCAA record books.
Princeton junior goaltender Zane Kalemba made 34 saves while Petizian stopped 31 for the Saints.
Princeton moved to 22-11-1 with the tie.
Bartlett was named to the league's All-Tournament Team following the conclusion on Saturday's championship game. The junior led the ECAC in postseason scoring with seven goals and an assist for eight points.
