Aemisegger Picks Up 10th All-America Honor, Places Third With "Perfect" Performance In 1650
March 22, 2009 | Women's Swimming and Diving
Swimming what head coach Susan Teeter called a "perfect race," junior Alicia Aemisegger picked up her 10th career All-America honor and a third-place finish overall in the 1650 during the final session of the 2008 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Aemisegger, who had earned All-America honors this weekend in both the 500 free and 400 IM, made it a perfect 3-for-3 when she finished third in the mile with a Princeton record and lifetime best time of 15:50.60. The two-time reigning Ivy League champion in the event took nearly seven full seconds off her Ivy League record time in the final, where she fell to only Georgia's Wendy Trott, who won the title in 15:45.49, and North Carolina's Whitney Sprague, who finished second in 15:46.57.
The third-place finish matches her second-best finish at the NCAA Championships in her career. As a freshman, Aemisegger placed second in the 400 IM and third in the 500; this finish also was four spots better than her eighth-place finish in the mile during the 2008 championship meet.
This was the final swim of a thrilling junior season for Aemisegger, which saw her overcome injury and illness to defend her 2007 and 2008 Ivy League Championships Swimmer of the Meet honor, as well as set numerous Princeton, DeNunzio Pool and Ivy League Championship records. Aemisegger will lead a talented Princeton squad next season as it looks to regain the league title from a talented Harvard squad while competing for even more individual honors in what is already one of the greatest careers in the proud tradition of Princeton women's swimming and diving.
Aemisegger and senior diver Katie Giarra, who earned All-America honors in the 3-meter diving competition, also helped Princeton to a Top-20 team finish at the NCAA Championships.
