Tochihara Nabs Player of the Week Honors
March 23, 2009 | Women's Lacrosse
PRINCETON, N.J. (3/23/09) - Sophomore goalie Erin Tochihara was named the Ivy League Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday, March 23.
Tochihara picked up her fourth and fifth wins over the season, both over nationally-ranked teams, to improve her and her team's record to 5-1 on the season.
On Wednesday, Tochihara made 12 saves in a 13-11 win over No. 16 James Madison. She held JMU to 0-for-3 shooting from the eight-meter arc. She made her third save on a free-position shot with three seconds to play in the game when she stopped a Mary Kate Lomady chance that would have been the equalizer.
On Saturday, Tochihara stopped eight shots as the team upset No. 7 Virginia, 8-7 on the Cavaliers home field. Prior to the game, UVA was undefeated at home. Ahead 5-4, Tochihara made a big save on a Jenny Hauser shot, after Virginia won the next draw control and quickly made its way down the field. Hauser wheeled around from behind the cage and Tochihara came up with the stop. With 12 seconds to play in the first half, Tochihara maintained the Tigers' lead with a save on a Julie Gardner shot. Ahead 8-7, Tochihara made her final save of the day on a Blair Weymouth opportunity with 18 seconds left in regulation.
Tochihara has a .570 save percentage, the best in the nation, and has an 8.71 goals against average. She has stopped 61 of 107 shots this season.
This is her second league honor this season.
