Lennox, 800 Free Relay Earn All-America Honors At Swim/Dive NCAA Championships
March 28, 2009 | Men's Swimming and Diving
It was another All-America day for the 2009 Ivy League champion Princeton men's swimming and diving team. Senior Doug Lennox earned first-team honors after reaching his second career NCAA final, while the quartet of Lennox, junior Jon Hartmann, freshman Colin Cordes and senior Will Schaffer captured All-America honorable mention in the 800 free relay.
Lennox, who came into the weekend with the third-best 100 fly time in the nation, qualified for the NCAA final with the final available position. His prelim time of 45.69 was eighth-fastest in the field, but he improved two places in the championship event and finished sixth in a time of 45.64. The event was won by Austin Staab of Stanford, who won the 100 fly with an NCAA record time of 44.18.
While Lennox would earn All-America honors in the 100 fly, he wouldn't be the only Princeton swimmer competing in the event. Senior Dan Eckel, who reached NCAAs with an A-cut performance in the 200 fly, finished 45th overall in the 100 by going 47.97 in prelims.
Schaffer swam the first individual preliminary event of the competition, the 400 IM. The tri-captain and Ivy League champion in the 200 IM placed 27th in 3:50.68; it would be the final collegiate swim for one of Rob Orr's most consistent performers over the last four years.
In the 200 free, Princeton sent two competitors into preliminaries. Hartmann finished 36th with a time of 1:36.51, while Cordes placed 50th in 1:38.53.
The quartet of Lennox, Hartmann, Cordes and Schaffer placed 15th nationally in the 800 free relay to earn its second All-America relay in as many days. Princeton completed the event in 6:26.13 to earn four team points. The Tigers' chase for a possible Top 20 finish will come down to the final day, as the team ended Friday with 19 team points to finish tied for 23rd with Ivy League rival Yale, which has seen senior Alex Righi make one championship final and one consolation final.
Saturday's highlight event for Princeton will be the 200 fly, where both Lennox and Eckel qualified with A-cut times.
