Women's Lacrosse Loses Heartbreaking One-Goal Game at Duke

DURHAM, N.C. (3/7/09) ? A goal by Emma Hamm with one minute left to play lifted No. 4 Duke to a 13-12 victory over No. 8 Princeton on Saturday, March 7 at Koskinen Stadium.
The Tigers thought they had the go-ahead goal at 2:59, but the goal was called off as senior Sarah Steele was called for an illegal stick.
After Hamm's goal, Duke won the final draw control, but senior Marie McKenna caused a turnover and picked up the ground ball with 15 seconds to play. The Tigers had nine seconds remaining after clearing the ball and but couldn't find an open shot before the buzzer sounded.
Steele and Christine Casaceli each finished the game with four points, with Steele collecting a hat trick. Sophomore Lizzy Drumm, senior Holly McGarvie and junior Kristin Morrison tallied two goals apiece.
Princeton (2-1) started the game with a quick three goals. Casaceli got the Tigers going when she picked up a feed from senior Anne Murray. Morrison and McGarvie followed up with an eight-meter goal each.
The Blue Devils answered back scoring five unanswered to take over the lead, 5-3, midway through the first half. Lindsay Gilbride score on a free position shot and Carolyn Davis tallied two unassisted markers, while Caroline Cryer scored two, one from the eight-meter.
The Tigers fought back and tied to game at 8:04. Freshman Cassie Pyle found Steele open for a goal and McGarvie notched an unassisted goal to make it 5-5.
Duke (5-1) evened the game with two goals within 11 seconds and got another from Sarah Bullard to take an 8-5 lead with 4:34 on the clock. Drumm scored her first goal of the day at 2:05 and Casaceli followed up with an eight-meter goal to make 8-7 at the break.
Princeton tied it at eight apiece at the 27:50 mark of the second frame, with Drumm's second goal of the day off a pass from McGarvie. The two teams traded goals in the 27th minute to even the game at 9-9.
The teams traded 3-0 runs with the Blue Devils taking a 12-9 advantage with 16:14 before the Tigers answered back getting goals from three different players to make it 12-12 at 3:41.
Each team collected 25 ground balls, while Duke had an upper hand in draw controls 17-10.
Sophomore Erin Tochihara made 16 saves, playing the entire 60 minutes. Six of her saves game on free position shots, holding the Blue Devils to 4-for-10. Mollie Mackler earned the win for Duke after making four saves in the second half. Teammate Kim Imbesi played in the first half and made five stops.
