Carpeni's Tiebreak Winner Clinches 4-3 Men's Tennis Win over Harvard
April 10, 2009 | Men's Tennis
PRINCETON -- George Carpeni's tiebreak win in the second set was the clincher that lifted the Princeton men's tennis team to a 4-3 victory over Harvard Friday afternoon in Jadwin Gym.
The Tigers improve to 2-2 on the Ivy season with Dartmouth coming in tomorrow for a 2 p.m. start. The match will be played outside at Lenz Tennis Center, weather permitting, or inside at Jadwin Gym.
After wins by Peter Capkovic, Alex Vuckovic, Carpeni and Yohei Shoji helped Princeton clinch a doubles point that proved to be crucial, a first singles win by Capkovic staked the Tigers to a 2-0 lead.
Harvard got the two points back soon after with wins at second and third singles, leaving the match's outcome in the hands of the lower three singles positions.
Charlie Brosens picked up a win at sixth singles that put Princeton ahead, and when Carpeni rebounded from losing a 5-4 lead in set two to win in a tiebreak, the Tigers had their team victory. Alex Faust's match was the last to finish, at fifth singles, with Faust losing in a tiebreaker-format third set.
