Women's Tennis Stands One Win from Ivy Title After 7-0 Blanking of Cornell
April 17, 2009 | Women's Tennis
PRINCETON -- After looking very strong in a sweep of Cornell Friday afternoon at the Lenz Tennis Center, the Princeton women's tennis team will make the short trip to Columbia Sunday with the hopes of bringing an Ivy title back with them.
Princeton moved one match closer to its first Ivy title since 2000 with a 7-0 blanking of the Big Red in which the Tigers yielded a total of three games in doubles and won all six singles matches in straight sets. Hilary Bartlett, Taylor Marable, Rachel Saiontz, Lauren McHale and Blakely Ashley each contributed with singles and doubles wins, while Kristen Scott, a senior playing her last match at the Lenz Center, teamed with Ashley's win at third doubles and junior Melissa Saiontz added a win at third singles.
Princeton's match at Columbia Sunday will begin at noon. The Tigers would win at least a share of the Ivy title with a victory Sunday regardless of the outcomes of Yale's and Brown's matches this weekend, the teams with which Princeton shared first place entering the weekend. If the three finish tied after Sunday, Yale would get the automatic NCAA bid by virtue of an Ivy League tiebreaker and Princeton would be in the running for an at-large.
