Swimmer Meredith Monroe Reaches Finals At U.S. Championship Meet
July 10, 2009 | Women's Swimming and Diving
Meredith Monroe, a rising sophomore and All-America swimmer at Princeton, qualified for the final session of the 200m backstroke at the 2009 Conoco Phillips National Championships in Indianapolis on Friday.
Monroe finished the fifth of nine heats in 2:15.61, the 20th-fastest time in the competition. She qualified for the C final, which will include all swimmers ranked 17th through 24th in the earlier heats. The quickest time qualifying for the C final belongs to Jana Mangimelli, and it less than a half second faster than Monroe.
"We're excited for Meredith to reach the finals in the 200 Backstroke at World Championship Trials," head coach Susan Teeter said. "She trains so hard to improve herself and race on the national level that she has clearly earned this swim. I know that her Princeton teammates will be cheering across the country knowing she can go faster tonight in the finals."
Monroe has been a back specialist for Princeton, but the versatile competitor earned All-America honors in the 800 free relay; it was her comeback in the anchor leg that helped the 2008 relay of Alicia Aemisegger, Justina DiFazio, Brett Shiflett and Monroe earn the first All-America honor for a Princeton women's swimming quartet in 27 years.
