Reigning NCAA Champ Tops Men's Volleyball 3-0
January 27, 2010 | Men's Volleyball
The 2009 NCAA champion UC-Irvine men's volleyball team used effective hitting and a 10-1 advantage in service aces to defeat the Princeton men's volleyball team 3-0 Tuesday night on Crawford Court.
Irvine, which is currently ranked seventh nationally, won a tight first set before exerting control in a 30-26, 30-16, 30-22 victory over Princeton. The Tigers are now 0-2 on the season and will complete a brutal three-match road trip Wednesday night at the 12th-ranked UC San Diego Tritons.
Princeton got double-digit kills from both of its outside hitters against the Irvine Anteaters. Junior Vincent Tuminelli led the team with 11 kills, while freshman Pat Schwagler chipped in with 10 kills. Sophomore Scott Liljestrom led the Tigers with 35 assists and five digs, while freshman middle Michael Dye recorded four blocks. Carl Hamming recorded seven kills and Princeton's only service ace in the match.
As a team, Princeton hit .239 and stayed close to Irvine in both blocks (9.5-9) and digs (25-24), but just as it did against Cal-Baptist on Monday, Princeton was not able to slow down its opponent's hitting. Irvine hit .374 for the match, including .609 in the second set.
