CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (1/29/10) -- Marc Hagel's late second period goal stood up as the Princeton men's hockey team skated to a 2-1 win at Harvard on Friday night at the Bright Hockey Center.
Princeton jumped ahead 1-0 at 11:51 of the first period when Cam MacIntyre set up Dan Bartlett's 13th tally of the season. MacIntyre received a pass from Michael Sdao on his own blueline and skated into the Harvard end, holding the puck until he hit the goal line, before feeding a centering pass through the slot to Bartlett on the opposite post.
Harvard evened the score on the power play 5:23 into the second period when Conor Morrison scored on a shot from the high slot. Louis Leblanc and Chris Huxley had assists on the tic-tac-toe passing play that drew the teams even at 1-1.
Princeton regained the lead with 2:26 left in the third period as the result of good work deep in the Harvard zone. Will MacDonald fed Kevin Lohry at the left post and Lohry skated behind the net where he fed Marc Hagel for a one-timer that went through the five-hole of Harvard goaltender Ryan Carroll for his first goal of the season. The goal snapped a 34-game goalless streak for Hagel, who last scored on Jan. 3, 2009 in a win over Harvard at Hobey Baker Rink.
Harvard brought the pressure late in the third period looking to even the game up but Princeton withstood 13 third period shots from Harvard and killed two penalties in the final eight minutes to hold on for the victory.
Princeton goaltender Zane Kalemba stood tall over those final minutes, stopping 13 of his 34 saves in the final stanza including a flurry late while the Tigers skated a man down. Harvard outshot the Tigers 35-34 although Princeton outshot Harvard 15-11 in the first two periods.
Princeton improves to 8-10-2 overall and 4-8-1 in the ECAC with the win. The Tigers visit Dartmouth on Saturday at 4 p.m.
