PRINCETON (1/4/10) -- Dan Bartlett record a hat trick and factored in the scoring of four Princeton goals to lift the Tiger men's hockey team to a 4-3 overtime win over 11th-ranked and first-place Quinnipiac on Monday night at Hobey Baker Rink.
Bartlett netted Princeton's first two goals in the game, helping Princeton to a 2-0 lead in the second period, then set up a goal to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead at the game's midway point. Quinnipiac rallied, but Bartlett again provided the offensive spark, finishing off the team's first hat trick of the season at 2:45 of overtime to lift Princeton to victory.
Bartlett opened the scoring with two goals two minutes apart early in the second period. He put the Tigers on the board with the rebound of his own shot after Mike Kramer found him in front of the net. Matt Arhontas also had an assist on the goal as Princeton opened the scoring for the first time in three games.
Two minutes later, Bartlett lit the lamp for the second time of the game after redirected a Brad Schroeder point shot into the Bobcat goal. The goal came on the power play and was also assisted by Kevin Lohry. Bartlett's second goal matched his career high of two points in a game, a total he had reached 11 times in 103 career games wearing the Orange and Black.
D'Arcy Oakes quickly cut the lead in half winning a battle off the wall and sliding a backhander into the Tiger net, but Bartlett and the Tigers answered back in the 11th minute of the period when he knocked down a Bobcat clearing attempt at the blue line and skated in before feeding a cross-ice pass, which Kramer one-timed past Bobcat goaltender Dan Clarke.
Quinnipiac again cut the lead to one when in the final minute of the second period, Oakes scored his second of the night, gloving down a lead pass and scoring on a breakaway. The Bobcats carried that momentum into the third period and drew the game even in the eighth minute when Scott Zurevinski went to the net and scored on his own rebound.
Regulation ended even at 3-3, but Princeton had to kill off a long two-man Quinnipiac advantage just after the Bobcats scored the tying goal, but Princeton was able to keep the potent Bobcat power play scoreless.
In overtime, Princeton fired three shots on Clarke and it was the third one, a rocket against the grain by Bartlett between the circles that gave the Tigers the one-goal win. Sam Sabky and Taylor Fedun, battling along the wall, had assists on the game-winning goal.
Bartlett's hat trick was the first for a Princeton player since Cam MacIntyre scored three times in the opening game of the 2007-08 season, a 6-2 win at Yale on Oct. 26, 2007. He extended his scoring streak to three games and was the second Tiger in a three-game span to have a four-point game. Also Lohry extended his scoring streak to four games.
Goaltender Alan Reynolds made 22 saves in the win as he earned his fourth win of the season. Clarke had 30 saves in the Bobcat goal as Princeton outshot Quinnipiac 34-25.
Princeton is now 6-8-2 overall and 3-6-1 in the ECAC after defeating the league's first-place team. The Tigers are currently on a four-game unbeaten streak with a 3-0-1 record and all three wins came against ranked opponents.
The Tigers are back in action on Friday night when 17th-ranked Union visits Baker Rink at 7 p.m.
Notes: Princeton dressed a full lineup after playing short in the last four games … Princeton was without any of its three captains as injuries sidelined Kevin Kaiser, Cam MacIntyre and Jody Pederson … Matt Godlewski played in his first game of the season, returning from offseason surgery … Brad Schroeder returned to the lineup and had an assist after missing the previous four games … Princeton is 3-1-2 in overtime this season … The win was the 150th of head coach Guy Gadowsky's career.
