PRINCETON (1/7/10) - The Princeton men's hockey team concludes its five-game intersession schedule this weekend when Union and Rensselaer visit Baker Rink for a pair of league contests. Princeton enters the weekend unbeaten in four and with consecutive wins over Cornell and Quinnipiac.
The Tigers' current four-game unbeaten streak is its longest such stretch since early February of last season when the Tigers won four straight games. The Tigers are 3-0-1 in their last four with all three wins coming against ranked foes. The Tigers went into the holiday break with a 3-2 win at then ninth-ranked UMass Lowell. Princeton then was off for 17 days before returning to action at the Florida College Classic. Princeton opened the tournament with a 6-6 tie against Maine and then defeated fourth-ranked Cornell 3-2 in the tournament's third-place game. Princeton returned to its home ice for its first home game in six weeks on Monday night and edged 11th-ranked Quinnipiac 4-3 in overtime.
Dan Bartlett provided the offensive spark for the Tigers in the win over their travel partner as he scored three goals and set up a fourth Princeton goal in the 4-3 Tiger triumph. Bartlett scored his first two goals in the second period to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. After the Bobcats trimmed the lead to a goal, Bartlett set up Mike Kramer to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead in the second period. Quinnipiac got one goal back late in the second and evened the score in the third, but Bartlett again scored in the extra session to complete the hat trick and give Princeton the win. Kramer also finished the game with multiple points, garnering an assist in addition to Princeton's third goal in the victory.
Kevin Lohry extended his point-scoring streak to four games with an assist on Bartlett's first goal of the game. Bartlett and Kramer each extended their streaks to three games. Bartlett has seven points in the span while Kramer has six.
Goaltender Alan Reynolds has backstopped the Tigers to its last two wins, making 27 saves for the win over Cornell and 22 saves on Monday night against Quinnipiac. The junior is 4-2 this season.
The win was Princeton's third in overtime this season as the Tigers boast a 3-1-2 record in overtime games. Four of the six games have come at home and all three of the team's overtime wins have come on Baker Rink's ice as the Tigers have bested Brown, Dartmouth and Quinnipiac at home in extra time.
Princeton opens the weekend on Friday night when it hosts Union. The Tigers lead its all-time series with Union 22-18-4 and hold a 15-8-1 series edge in games played at Baker Rink. The teams met five times last season, splitting the regular season series with each team winning on the road. Princeton then took two of three from Union in the ECAC Quarterfinals at Baker Rink to advance to its second straight ECAC semifinal appearance.
Union is currently 10-4-5 overall and 4-0-3 in the ECAC, the only remaining team without a loss in league play. The Dutchmen also rank 17th in the latest USCHO.com Poll. Union enters the weekend 7-1-3 in its last 14 games, with its only loss a one-goal decision to nationally-ranked Massachusetts. Union's last two outings were wins at Connecticut and Army.
The Tigers conclude the weekend on Sunday afternoon against Rensselaer in a game that will nationally televised on ESPNU. Rensselaer leads the all-time series with Princeton 61-27-9 and holds a 23-13-4 edge in games played in Princeton. The teams have split in each of the last three seasons and in the past two seasons, the road team has won all four meetings.
Rensselaer is 10-10-1 overall and 3-4-0 in the ECAC entering the weekend. The Engineers opened the season 7-3-1, but have gone 3-7 since to even out at .500. Two of the Engineer's three wins in the span came at Boston University and against Michigan. RPI enters the weekend though after falling to Michigan State in the Great Lakes Invitational championship game.
