PRINCETON (1/8/10) - The Princeton men's hockey team fell to 17th-ranked Union 7-3 on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Union built a lead early in the second period after the Tigers scored the game's first goal.
Union scored three-straight goals to overcome an early 1-0 deficit, then scored the game's last three goals after Princeton trimmed the Dutchmen lead to 4-3 midway through the third period. Kelly Zajac and Andrew Buote both scored two goals for Union.
Princeton's Michael Sdao opened the scoring at 8:19 of the first when he held in a Union clear at the point and took a shot that was deflected by a Union player on its way to the net and by Union goaltender Keith Kincaid for his second goal of the season. Buote evened the scored two minutes later when his shot through a screen found the Princeton net.
Zajac and Jason Walters made it 3-1 Union with goals in the fifth and eighth minutes of the second period. Zajac scored off a long rush and Walters got his own rebound after curling out from behind the net.
Princeton trimmed the lead back to a goal while skating 4-on-4 with two minutes left in the second when Taylor Fedun scored on a backhander from down low on the rebound of a Mark Magnowski shot. The Tigers though took two penalties within a minute of the goal and Union converted on the two-man advantage as Mario Valery-Trabucco scored with 51 seconds left in the period to give his team a 4-2 lead after two periods.
The Tigers got back within a goal at 8:24 of the third when Dan Bartlett netted his 12th of the season after Eric Meland knocked a puck to him, but Princeton could get no closer as Union scored three times in the final nine minutes. Zajac scored on a breakaway at 11:46 and Stephane Boileau added a power-play goal at 12:19. Buote sealed the win with an empty netter in the final minute.
Alan Reynolds made 26 saves in the Princeton net while Kinkaid got 37 Tiger shots. Princeton outshot the Dutchmen 40-34.
Princeton is now 6-9-2 overall and 3-7-1 in the ECAC. The Tigers are back in action on Sunday against Rensselaer at 3 p.m. on ESPNU.
Notes: Princeton dressed a short lineup for the fifth time in four games … The road team has won the last five regular season games in the Princeton-Union series … Bartlett has now scored in four-straight games, the longest streak for a Tiger this season … Princeton got goals from two defensemen for the first time this season.
