Kolodzik Continues In-State Dominance In 24-13 Loss At Rider
January 09, 2010 | Wrestling
Sophomore 149-pounder Daniel Kolodzik won two Ohio state championships in high school. He looks like he is going for a New Jersey state title in college. One month after knocking off a Top 20 wrestler from Rutgers, Kolodzik defeated Rider's Mike Kessler, a former Top 20 wrestler himself, by major decision during Princeton's 24-13 loss at Alumni Gym in Lawrenceville.
Kolodzik's win was not the lone highlight of a match that was not far from going Princeton's way. Freshman Luis Ramos earned a 7-4 victory over Aaron Nester at 141, junior tri-captain Travis Erdman edged Jim Resnick 2-1 and sophomore Kurt Brendel earned a 4-1 win over Mike Ward. Those wins actually left Princeton down only one point with two matches remaining, but Rider's strength is in the upperweights, and a pair of Top 20 Broncs clinched the win with a pin at 197 and a major decision at heavyweight.
For Kolodzik, it was yet another impressive win for the second-year starter. He controlled the match for a major decision that evened the team match at 7-7. Princeton lost two one-point matches (125 and 157); had the Tigers pulled out both of them, they would have taken a 19-18 victory. Freshman Andrew Hirai, competing in the place of starter Garrett Frey, who missed the match for personal reasons, lost a high-scoring 8-7 match. The same score went against Danny Scotton at 157.
Princeton is now off for the exam break and will return for three home matches during the final weekend of January, beginning with a Friday night match against Duquesne.
