Wrestling Routs Duquesne For Fourth Victory Of The Season
January 30, 2010 | Wrestling
The progress continues for the Princeton wrestling team, which picked up its fourth win of the season Friday night with a 29-9 victory over Duquesne. Luis Ramos became the second freshman with at least 10 wins, while sophomore Tony Comunale had a successful return match to the Tiger lineup.
This is the first time Princeton has recorded at least four wins over Division I programs since the 2002-03 season, and with 11 matches still remaining, Princeton can look for its best season since a 12-win year in 2001-02. Once again, the youth shined for the Tigers against Duquesne; of Princeton's 29 team points, 21 came from either freshmen or sophomores.
The meet began with a pin in 4:59 from Princeton freshman Garrett Frey, who won his team-best 18th match of the season Friday night. Comunale, competing for the first time since injuries cost him more than a year of competition, edged out Jake Swink 5-4 at 133 pounds.
The Princeton lead built to 12-0 when Ramos picked up his 10th victory of the season. The freshman topped Duquesne's second-winningest wrestler, Tony Lascari, 5-2 at 141 pounds.
The Dukes got three points back when team leader Josh Pascazi earned a decision, but Princeton senior Danny Scotton dominated Alex Martinez for a 13-1 major decision that built the lead to 16-3. A decision for sophomore Andy Lowy and a major for Travis Erdman moved the score to 23-3 and clinched the team win for Princeton.
Sophomore Kurt Brendel matched Lowy with his 14th win of the season by recording a 7-3 victory over Ryan Sula at 184 pounds. Freshman Charles Fox, who could become a third freshman with 10 wins if he has a perfect Saturday, earned a tight 3-2 win at 197. Duquesne's Nadeem Farah finished the dual with a quick pin at heavyweight.
Princeton will face a pair of tough challenges at home Saturday, beginning with a 1 p.m. showdown against the Virginia Cavaliers. Currently ranked 19th in the latest Intermat rankings, Virginia brings a quartet of Top 20 wrestlers to Dillon Gym. Leading the way is 174-pounder Chris Henrich, a junior who has won 23 of 25 matches this season and is ranked third in the country. Freshman 197-pounder Mike Salopek has 22 wins on the season for a Virginia squad that is 13-5 overall and has won five of its last six matches, including a 28-9 victory over Penn.
Clarion, which will take on Princeton at 3 p.m., is 3-5 on the season and is led by senior Hadley Harrison, who has 25 wins on the season at 157 pounds, and 149-pounder James Fleming, who is 18-5.
