CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (10/8/10) - Fourth-ranked Virginia scored late in the first half and early in the second half to build a 2-0 lead in a 2-1 win over the third-ranked Princeton field hockey team on Friday night.
The start of the game was delayed by more than 30 minutes, but when play got underway Princeton was off to a quick start, earning six penalty corners and sending five shots towards the UVA goal before the Cavaliers earned either a corner or a shot.
Play leveled out as the first half continued and Virginia took advantage of its fourth corner when Haley Carpenter scored. Carpenter inserted the ball on the corner and received it back from Elly Buckly for the goal along the right post.
Virginia took the 1-0 lead into halftime and extended its lead to 2-0 less than a minute into the second half, again converting on a corner. This time Buckley took a shot that was blocked but Tara Puffenberger put in the rebound for the goal.
Princeton moved within a goal in the 45th minute when Katie Reinprecht netted her ninth goal of the season. The goal came off a drive to left side of the cage.
The Virginia defense clamped down following the goal and did not allow another Princeton shot attempt in the game as the Cavaliers took the 2-1 win.
Virginia outshot Princeton 14-10 overall and 6-1 in the second half after the Tigers held a 9-8 edge following the first 35 minutes. Virginia also outcornered Princeton 10-9. Kim Kastuk made six saves in the UVA goal, while Christina Maida had six saves for the Tigers and Reinprecht added a defensive save.
Princeton is now 8-2 overall this season. The Tigers return to action on Sunday when they host eighth-ranked Louisville at 1 p.m.
