PRINCETON (11/17/10) -- The Princeton men's hockey team carries a three-game winning streak into its home opener this weekend as it hosts ECAC Hockey and Ivy League rivals Harvard and Dartmouth to Hobey Baker Rink.
Princeton started the season with three-straight losses, but has bounced back to win its last three outings, earning 4-3 wins at both Brown and Colgate before topping Cornell 2-1 in overtime last Saturday. Princeton has lived on the edge all season as five of the team's six games have been decided by a goal after being tied in the third period. Only Princeton's loss at Yale was decided by more, with the second goal coming late in the third period.
Last weekend the Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead at Colgate, only to have the Raiders scored a goal in each period to draw even in the third, but Mike Kramer's goal on a breakaway put Princeton back on top in the 4-3 win. Andrew Calof continued the hot start to his collegiate career with a goal and three assists in the win and he now has 11 points in six games this season. Kramer had two goals in the win and Rob Kleebaum netted his first career goal.
A day later, the Tigers gained a first period lead when Eric Meland redirected a Michael Sdao point shot on the power play late in the first period. Princeton held the lead until the very end of the game when Cornell pulled its goaltender and got the equalizer with nine seconds remaining. Unfazed, Princeton fired all four shots in overtime before Will Ford broke the deadlock with his first college goal. The win was the third in four seasons for Princeton at Cornell after the Tigers had fallen in their previous 13 trips to Lynah Rink.
Calof leads all Tigers with nine assists and 11 points this season. His two goals are tied for second on the team in scoring with Kramer and Sdao. Matt Arhontas leads the team with five goals scored. All five came in Princeton's first four games as Arhontas was held out of the lineup last weekend because of injury.
In the net, the Tigers have rotated through their three goalies, each getting two starts through the team's first six games. All three goalies have a win in their last start, with Mike Condon winning at Brown, Alan Reynolds winning at Colgate and Sean Bonar getting the win at Cornell. Bonar leads the trio statistically with a 1.48 goals-against average and a .944 save percentage.
Princeton opens the weekend on Friday night against Harvard. The Crimson is 2-2-0 on the season with all four games coming against league competition. Last weekend the Crimson split on the road, winning at 4-2 at St. Lawrence and falling at Clarkson 3-1. Alex Killorn leads the Crimson with two goals scored and Kyle Richter has been solid in net with a 1.76 goals against and a .947 save percentage. Last season Princeton was 1-2-1 against Harvard, taking three of four points in the regular season, but Harvard swept Princeton in the first round of the ECAC Hockey playoffs.
The game between Princeton and Dartmouth on Saturday is the second this year between the teams, which opened against one another on Oct. 29 at the Ivy Shootout. Dartmouth won that game 2-1 scoring four minutes into the third period to break a 1-1 tie. The loss snapped a two-game Princeton win streak in the series. Dartmouth is currently 3-2-1 overall and outscored Clarkson and St. Lawrence a combined 13-2 last weekend. James Mello enters the game 2-0-1 in goal with a 0.65 goals-against average and a .980 save percentage.
It will be a quick turnaround for Princeton following the weekend as the Tigers are back in action next Tuesday night at Quinnipiac.
