PRINCETON (12/1/10) -- The Princeton men's hockey team returns home to Hobey Baker Rink to open a four-game homestand to close the calendar year this weekend against Clarkson and St. Lawrence. Princeton enters the weekend winners in five of their last six games.
It will be a busy weekend of hockey at Hobey Baker Rink as both men's games will be the second half of doubleheaders with the women's team. On Friday, the Princeton women host Yale at 4 p.m., followed by the men's games with Clarkson at 7 p.m. Saturday starts with the Princeton women hosting Brown at 2 p.m., and the men entertaining St. Lawrence at 5 p.m.
Princeton improved to 5-4-0 overall and 5-2-0 in ECAC Hockey when it topped Quinnipiac 3-0 on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving at the TD Bank Sports Center. Cam Ritchie snapped a 37-game scoring drought when he scored on the power play midway through the second period to put the Tigers on top in the win. Fellow blueliner Taylor Fedun netted his first goal of the season in the win and Kevin Lohry added an empty-net goal, while Sean Bonar stopped all 23 shots he faced for the shutout.
All three of Princeton's goals in the Quinnipiac game came on special teams with Ritchie and Fedun connecting on the power play and Lohry's empty-netter coming shorthanded. Princeton now has scored eight goals on the power play and three shorthanded, totaling 11 special teams goals to 10 scored at even strength.
Princeton has also been stingy defensively, allowing only four goals over its last four games and getting shutouts in two of the four and coming within seconds on a third shutout in the win at Cornell. Princeton's 2.11 goals allowed per game ranks sixth in the country.
A total of eight Princeton skaters tallied points in the win at Quinnipiac, including Andrew Calof and Mike Kramer, Princeton's top two scorers this season. Ten Tigers have scored goals this season, led by five from Matt Arhontas, 15 have assists, and 18 have registered at least a point.
Princeton's win last Tuesday night put the Tigers atop the ECAC Hockey standings with five wins and 10 points, but the Tigers slipped to second as Dartmouth swept Harvard over the weekend to move ahead of the Tigers by a point with its 5-2-1 mark and 11 points, although Princeton has a game in hand on the Big Green. Yale sits third with eight points (4-0-0) and has three games in hand on Princeton.
Ten of the 12 league teams will be in action this weekend with four league games scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights. Princeton and Quinnipiac will host Clarkson and St. Lawrence, while Union and Rensselaer visit Brown and Yale. Additionally Cornell hosts Alabama-Hunstville for two games and Colgate has a non-league games at Army.
Princeton hosts Clarkson on Friday night in the 102nd meeting between the schools. Clarkson leads the all time series with Princeton 70-26-5 overall and is 32-19-4 in games played in Princeton. The teams split two games last season with each winning at home. Arhontas had two goals and an assist in a 4-1 Princeton home win, while Mike Kramer had a goal and assist in a 4-3 loss in Potsdam. The Clarkson win snapped a three-game Princeton win streak in the series.
Clarkson was picked to finish 12th in both the ECAC Coaches and Media Poll, but is off to a good start with a 7-5-2 overall record and a 2-2-1 mark in league play. Clarkson enters the weekend with wins in three of four games, topping Harvard, St. Lawrence and Lake Superior State in the span.
The Tigers complete the weekend with a Saturday early evening game against St. Lawrence. The Saints lead the all-time series with Princeton 59-18-9 overall and are 27-11-4 in games played on the Princeton campus. Last season the Saints took three of four points from Princeton, winning 5-2 at Baker Rink in November and forging a 2-2 tie in Canton in February.
The Saints are currently 2-7-3 overall and 2-3-0 in ECAC Hockey and enter the weekend having dropped their last three games against Harvard, Dartmouth and Clarkson, but haven't played since Nov. 20. St. Lawrence got both of its wins in its league-opening weekend when it swept Cornell and Colgate at home. The Saints have also recorded ties against Minnesota State and Western Michigan.
Princeton will continue its homestand next weekend when it hosts UMass Lowell on Friday and Saturday in non-league games.
