Both Princeton teams are coming off successful Ivy League opening weekends. Senior Megan Waters led a Princeton charge into the 2010-11 Ivy League season. The Tigers, who were ranked third in the latest mid-major poll, swept both Cornell and Penn in Ithaca to move to 2-0 in the Ivy League season.
Princeton defeated Cornell 165-127 and Penn 171.5-120.5 to improve its dual meet win streak to 33.
Waters won both the 50 and 100 free in pool record times, and she followed with a close win over teammate Carter Stephens in the 100 fly.
A pair of freshmen picked up their first collegiate wins during the weekend. Maureen McCotter won the 1000 in 10:16.47, while Karen Wang too the 100 back in 57.03. A third freshman, Lisa Boyce, placed second to Waters in both sprint free races.
Junior Christina Kirkwood got Princeton a win in the diving competition. She scored 231.90 points to win the three-meter event.
Senior tri-captain Colin Hanna won three events to lead the Princeton men's swimming and diving team to an impressive sweep of Cornell and Penn in its 2010-11 Ivy League opener.
The Tigers swept the pair of dual meets, defeating Cornell 192-100 and Penn 233-67.
Hanna opened the individual swimming events by taking the 1000 in 9:28.27, and he followed with a win in the 200 back (1:52.91). He finished the triple by taking the 200 IM in 1:53.18.
Both juniors Jon Christensen and Colin Cordes were double winners. Christensen won the 100 breast in 56.12 and the 200 breast in 2:02.16. Cordes won the 200 free in 1:41.15 and the 100 free in 46.44.
Sophomore Stevie Vines won the one-meter diving competition by scoring 304.65 points and placed second in the three-meter competition with 310.75.
While there will be team scoring for the three-day session, the dual meet between Princeton and Brown will also be decided during the weekend. Brown is coming off a pair of razor-thin losses to Dartmouth last weekend. The women lost 156-144, and the men were even closer in a 151-149 loss. Among the weekend winners for Brown were Kristin Jackson (100 breast) and Kristen Caldarella (50 free), as well as James Hunter (100 free) and Conor Carlucci (100 breast, 100 fly).
The Columbia men, who will host Princeton Feb. 11 at Uris Pool, are 3-1 on the season, including Ivy League wins over both Penn and Yale. In last weekend's win over Army, senior Adam Powell, junior Bruno Esquen, sophomore Sean MacKenzie and freshman Eric Traub were all double winners for the Lions. Powell is the reigning Ivy League champion in both the 50 and 100 free.
Florida will be sending a portion of its nationally ranked programs to Princeton for the Big Al Open. Fourteen women and 16 men will compete for a Gator program that is ranked fourth in both the men's and women's national polls.
The Rider men and women have already competed in six dual meets, with each earning at least one team win in November. The men topped Marist 151-149 in a meet that featured three wins by Johnny Funk (100 free, back and fly). The women have won two of their last three meets, including a 162-135 win over LaSalle. In that meet, senior Brianna Burns swept both the 100 and 200 free.
Washington State moved to 5-0 in dual meets this season after earning a 164-98 victory over Northern Arizona. Freshman Taylor Indahl was a double event winner with victories in the 200 breast and 400 IM. The win total more than doubles the amount of Washington State dual victories from all of last season (two).
