Andrea Kropp '14 Selected To U.S. Squad For World University Games
December 20, 2010 | Women's Swimming and Diving
Freshman Andrea Kropp has already made a splash at Princeton, and she will be looking to make another on the international stage next summer. Kropp has been named to the U.S. team for the 2011 World University Games in Shanzen, China, which will be held Aug. 12-22.
Kropp, who broke the Princeton record in the 200 breast during the 2010 Big Al Open, had two impressive performances last summer. At the 2010 ConocoPhillips National Championships, Kropp finished fifth in the 200 breast 'A' championship final with a lifetime best swim of 2:27.63. Reigning Olympic gold medalist Rebecca Soni won the race, while former Olympic gold medalist Amanda Beard placed second. Kropp was within a second of placing third and didn't lose to a swimmer under the age of 23.
Kropp also reached the bonus final in the 100 breast and placed 18th overall, while she finished 28th in the 400 IM. She, along with other members of the heralded Class of 2014, also competed at the 2010 Speedo Junior National Championships. Kropp set a meet record in winning the 200 breast title by more than 1.5 seconds and added a 12th-place finish in the 100 breast.
This won't be the first time a rising Princeton sophomore has represented the U.S. in this event. In 2007, Alicia Aemisegger was part of the U.S. team for the World University Games in Thailand. Ironically, it was Aemisegger's 200 breast record (2:13.40) that Kropp broke when she went 2:11.62 during the Big Al Open.
Kropp isn't far off the 100 breast record either. Her time of 1:02.14 is the second-best time posted by a Princeton woman and only .11 of a second off the record time of multiple Ivy League champion Courtney Kilkuts.
