PRINCETON (12/3/10) - Clarkson scored two goals in the first period and two goals in the second to build a lead and withstood a Princeton rally to pick up a 5-3 win over the Tiger men's hockey team on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink.
Princeton came out of the gates flying and took the game's first 11 shots on their way to a 1-0 lead. Eric Meland appeared to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead on the power play six minutes into the game but his goal was waved off due to incidental contact with Clarkson goaltender Paul Karpowich in front of the net. Meland got a second chance three minutes later, again on the power play as redirected Cam Ritchie's point shot to give Princeton a 1-0 lead. Jack Berger assisted on the goal, which came at 9:41.
Clarkson quickly answered to even the score as Lauri Tuohimaa took a shot that was saved but Nik Pokulok put in the rebound just 13 seconds after Meland gave the Tigers a lead just moments earlier. Clarkson then jumped on top late in the period when Adam Pawlick scored on the power play with 41 seconds left in the period.
Clarkson built its lead with another two goals in the second period. Corey Tamblyn scored 48 seconds into the period and Matt Zarbo converted on a turnover at the 12:00 mark to put his team ahead 4-1. Princeton added a goal in the final minute of the period when Rob Kleebaum scored on the power play. Jack Berger and Derrick Pallis assisted on the goal, which brought the Tigers within two to start the third period.
Princeton got back within a goal in the third period when Taylor Fedun netted his second goal of the season on a 4 on 3 six minutes into the third period. Pallis pinched in and fed Fedun, whose shot beat Karpowich under the cross bar. Princeton could get no closer as Scott Freeman added an empty netter in the final minute.
Princeton outshot Clarkson 42-27 in the game and 22-11 in the final period. Princeton had 23 shots in the game on the power play and converted on three of 10 chances, while holding Clarkson to one of six chances.
Mike Condon made 22 saves in the loss while Karpowich stopped 39 for the Golden Knights.
Princeton falls to 5-5-0 overall and 5-3-0 in ECAC Hockey with the loss. The Tigers host St. Lawrence on Saturday at 5 p.m.
