Squash Weekend Highlighted By Showdown With No. 1 Trinity
February 12, 2010 | Men's Squash, Women's Squash
While both the Princeton men's and women's squash teams will both compete at home Sunday afternoon against Williams College, the biggest match in college squash this weekend will come Saturday in Hartford, Conn., when the Princeton men meet Trinity in a rematch of the 2009 epic national team final.
Currently ranked fourth nationally in the CSA team poll, Princeton is 9-2 on the season after wins last weekend at both Dartmouth and Harvard. Moving the road win streak to three will be a considerable challenge, though. After all, nobody has beaten Trinity since Feb. 22, 1998; the streak spans 220 matches and 11 national team championships, including the last four at the expense of runner-up Princeton.
The 2009 final will be one that few in attendance will ever forget. Lasting more than six hours, Princeton stood two points away from victory in one match and four points away in another, but the Bantams proved too strong and came away with the title. Led by two-time national champion Baset Chaudhry, Trinity is 16-0 this season and has defeated No. 2 Yale and No. 3 Rochester by a combined total of 16-2 in two matches.
Princeton, which is hoping to have its full lineup intact for the weekend after injuries ravaged the team early in the season, will test itself against the best one week before the CSA national team championships. Freshman No. 1 Todd Harrity will get his first look at Chaudhry, who has lost only one collegiate match in his career, while No. 2 Dave Letourneau could face a rematch against Parth Sharma in one of the decisive matches in last year's final. Letourneau will be a match-time decision, though; injury kept him out of last weekend's matches against Harvard and Dartmouth.
Princeton will also be hoping for good news at Yale Saturday; the Bulldogs host the Harvard Crimson that afternoon, and the fate of the Ivy League title is on the line. A win for Yale over the No. 5 Crimson would give the Bulldogs sole possession of the Ivy title. A Harvard win would force a three-way share of the Ivy crown between Princeton, Yale and Harvard.
On Sunday, both the Princeton men and women will take on Williams College at the Jadwin Squash Courts. The women, who will host No. 2 Trinity next weekend, take the court at 11:30 a.m., while the men will compete at 1:30 p.m.
