Volleyball Earns Road Split With 3-0 Sweep Of Harvard
February 14, 2010 | Men's Volleyball
Near flawless hitting from middles Jeff McCown and Michael Dye helped the Princeton men's volleyball team to a 3-0 road sweep of Harvard Saturday afternoon. The win is Princeton's third in four matches.
One day after falling in its Tait Division opener at Springfield, Princeton showed resilience by pushing forward early and never looking back. The Tigers won the opening set 30-24 and the next two 30-23 and 30-23.
Junior Vincent Tuminelli led the Tigers with 15 kills, while senior co-captain Carl Hamming recorded 12 kills and six digs for the Tigers. However, it was the play of McCown and Dye in the middle that really propelled the Tiger offense. McCown had eight kills without an error for a .571 hitting percentage, while Dye had eight kills on only 11 swings (.636). McCown had a brilliant all-around match, with three aces and six blocks to go along with his strong hitting.
"The team rebounded very well after last night's disappointing performance," said head coach Sam Shweisky after Princeton improved to 3-4 on the season. "We played high-level, energetic and efficient volleyball. Give credit to Jeff McCown and Michael Dye for being up early and hitting at an exceptional percentage."
Sophomore Scott Liljestrom continued his strong play at setter with 41 assists and helped the offense to a .370 attack percentage overall. Princeton was consistent throughout the three sets, hitting at least .346 in each of its three wins. Defensively, Princeton limited Harvard to a .184 attack percentage and recorded 9.5 blocks.
