PRINCETON (2/24/10) - The Princeton men's hockey team wraps up the 2009-10 regular season this weekend at home against fourth-ranked Yale and Brown as the Tigers fight for home ice in the opening round of the ECAC playoffs next weekend.
Princeton split a pair of games last weekend in the Capital District of New York State, falling at 16th-ranked Union 4-1 and defeating Rensselaer 7-0. On Friday night, Union built a 3-0 lead with goals in the second and third period before Kevin Lohry put Princeton on the board late in the third period. Union sealed the win with an empty-net goal.
The following day, Zane Kalemba and the Tiger penalty kill shined in the first period before the offense took over in the second and third periods. Kalemba made 20 saves in the opening stanza and the Tigers killed off five penalties before Matt Arhontas gave the Tigers a lead late in the first. The Tigers then exploded for three goals in each of the next to periods en route to the 7-0 win. Will MacDonald had two goals and an assist while Mark Magnowski had a goal and two helpers. Arhontas, Brodie Zuk and Taylor Fedun also had multiple points in the win. MacDonald and Marc Hagel were the only Tigers with points in both games last weekend.
Princeton's win on Saturday kept the Tigers within a point of eighth-place Harvard in the race for home ice in the opening round of the ECAC playoffs. Princeton is tied with Brown for ninth in the standings and pair is both in contention entering the final weekend of the regular season. Both also lay just two points behind seventh-place Quinnipiac. Princeton faces Yale and Brown, Brown is at Quinnipiac and Princeton, while Harvard visits Clarkson and St. Lawrence.
Princeton and Yale meet Friday night in the 243rd meeting between the two schools, the most Princeton has faced any other opponent. Yale leads the all-time series 123-102-9, while Princeton is 47-40-4 in games played in Princeton. Yale has taken two meetings from the Tigers this season, winning 5-2 in Princeton and 4-1 in New Haven. The teams split last season with each team winning at home.
Yale is 18-6-3 overall and 14-4-2 to sit atop the ECAC standings. Yale has climbed to fourth in the national polls after winning its last six games. Last weekend the Bulldogs won a 7-5 shootout over St. Lawrence and then rallied to defeat Clarkson 4-3 in overtime, scoring three goals in less than a minute to force overtime.
Princeton hosts Brown on Saturday in the 148th meeting between the opponents. Brown leads the all-time series 79-61-7 and is 34-29-4 in games at Princeton. Brown snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Tigers with a 3-1 win in early December in Providence. Princeton won an earlier meeting in late October at home.
Brown is 8-15-4 overall and 6-10-4 in the ECAC and currently tied with Princeton for ninth in the standings. Like Princeton, Brown enters the weekend with aspirations for a home ice playoff series next weekend. The Bears rallied twice in the third period a week ago to take three of four points from Clarkson and St. Lawrence and snap a five-game winless streak.
