PRINCETON (2/6/10) - The Princeton men's hockey team defeated fifth-ranked Cornell 5-3 on Saturday night at Hobey Baker Rink as five Tigers recorded multiple points, including Mark Magnowski and Marc Hagel who each had a goal and an assist.
Princeton never trailed in the win as the Tigers bounced back from Friday's loss to Colgate by earning their second win of the season against the Big Red.
The Tigers pulled ahead with two first period goals. Mike Kramer put Princeton on the scoreboard at 10:42 of the first on the power play as he completed a tic-tac-toe passing sequence by scoring his 10th goal of the season. Magnowski and Matt Arhontas assisted on the go-ahead goal.
Princeton extended the lead to two goals with 1:36 left in the second period on Will MacDonald's first collegiate goal. Derrick Pallis started the transition and got the puck to Kevin Lohry who worked it into the Cornell zone and got it to MacDonald for the goal, a shot that snuck through Cornell netminder Ben Scrivens.
A Joe Devin Cornell power-play goal trimmed the lead to 2-1 early in the second but Princeton scored two goals 46 seconds apart to push the lead to 4-1 with seven minutes gone in the stanza. First Jody Pederson got his second of the season as he put home a rebound at 5:50 off assists from Eric Meland and Dan Bartlett.
Less than a minute later it was Magnowski getting his fifth of the season as he returned to the lineup on Saturday after missing Friday's game with an injury. Magnowski gained the blueline and fired the puck on net. The shot was deflected by a defenseman's stick as the shot was taken and tricked Scrivens. The goal was assisted by Arhontas and Hagel and chased Scrivens from the Cornell goal.
The Big Red bounced back to move back within two goals with another power-play marker at 13:45 from Blake Gallagher on a two-man advantage and Colin Greening made it 4-3 when he put home his own rebound at 17:03.
Princeton regained control in the third period, outshooting Cornell 12-6 in the period and sealing the win with Hagel's empty-net goal at 19:09. Lohry and Pallis assisted on Hagel's third of the season.
Zane Kalemba finished the night with 30 saves for the Tigers, while Scrivens had 12 in the loss. Micahel Garman made 21 saves in relief. Princeton outshot Cornell 38-33.
Princeton is now 10-11-2 overall and 6-9-1 in the ECAC. The Tigers visit Clarkson next Friday night.
