Men's Hockey Season Comes to a Close With 3-0 Loss to Harvard
March 06, 2010 | Men's Ice Hockey
The win sends Harvard on to the quarterfinal round of the playoffs next weekend by virtue of the Crimson's 2-0 series win. The loss ends Princeton's season at 12-16-3.
Neither team scored in either of the first two periods, in a game that was controlled territorially by the Tigers. Princeton started fast, looking to get off to a good start following Friday night's loss and outshot Princeton 15-7 in the first period but could not crack Crimson starter Kyle Richter.
The second period was much more defensive with only nine shots fired in total, six on Richter and three on Zane Kalemba in the Princeton net. Again, neither team scored and the game went to the third period scoreless.
Princeton drew a power play 39 seconds into the third period when Alex Biega was whistled for cross checking. Princeton had a few chances on the power play and continued to pressure afterwards, culminating in a Kevin Crane chance on the doorstep. The attempt was stopped and moments later Crane was flagged for hooking, giving Harvard the power play.
Harvard won the offensive zone faceoff following the penalty and kept the puck in the zone for more than minute before Moriarty tallied the game-winning goal with assists from Louis Leblanc and Michael Biega. The Crimson added a second goal at 14:23 when Princeton pinched in the offensive zone and Danny Biega scored on a breakaway.
Luke Greiner sealed the win at 18:45 with a goal in the empty Princeton net.
Richter finished the night with a 37-save shutout while Kalemba made 14 saves in the loss. Princeton outshot Harvard 37-17 in the game.
The game marked the closing of the collegiate careers of Princeton's nine member senior class. The group of Brad Schroeder, Jody Pederson, Dan Bartlett, Mark Magnowski, Kevin Kaiser, Tyler Beachell, Cam MacIntyre, Kevin Crane and Zane Kalemba finish their careers in Orange and Black as the winningest class in program history with 70 wins over four years.
