Women's Tennis Clinches Share of Second Straight Ivy Title
April 16, 2010 | Women's Tennis
ITHACA, N.Y. -- For the first time in more than a decade and a half, the Princeton women's tennis team can call itself back-to-back Ivy League champions.
The Tigers, ranked 32nd nationally, clinched at least a share of the Ivy title with a 6-1 win at Cornell Friday afternoon and would win the program's first outright Ivy title since 2000 with a win over Columbia in Princeton Sunday.
A year ago, the Tigers finished 6-1 in the Ivy and shared the crown with Harvard. Prior to that league crown, Princeton hadn't won the Ivy since 2000, and the Tigers haven't won it back-to-back since 1993 and 1994.
Princeton won eight of the nine contests against the Big Red, and all six Tigers who took the court contributed to the win. Hilary Bartlett, Melissa Saiontz, Taylor Marable, Blakley Ashley and Monica Chow all followed their doubles victories with singles wins.
Sunday's match against Columbia will begin at 12 p.m. and will be played outdoors at Lenz Tennis Center in good weather or in Jadwin Gym in the event of rain.
